The Third Eye ProjectEye care is one of the greatest public health challenges in the 21st century. 50 million people in our world suffer from needless blindness. The vast majority of them will remain blind until they die, whereas most of them could have been easily treated. The Third Eye Project (TEP) is the answer to the high needs for eye care in developing countries.
TEP was created in 2009 by Dr. Rafal Nowak and a few his friends, sharing the same interests and passions. The goal was to set up a mobile eye clinic and a medical team of volunteers who will travel to remote areas of the Third World to deliver high quality medical services there.
In 2005 and 2006 Dr. Nowak, at
that time - a resident in ophthalmology, left for Nepal to acquire
experience in tropical ophthalmology. He had been inspired by Dr. Geoffrey Tabin and his
Himalayan Cataract Project. Within 8 months of voluntary work he
gained experience in various places of the country - including
the
Lions
Eye
Care Center
(Kathmandu),
the Lions
Eye Care Center
(Damak),
the Fateh-Bal Eye Hospital (Nepalganj), Kedia
Eye Hospital
(Birganj).
He took part in numerous eye camps held in remote mountainous
regions. To extend his skills he also completed a
microsurgical training
at
the
Bombay City Eye Institute and Research Centre
(India).
After coming back to Poland Dr. Nowak has made the decision of creating the first charitable ophthalmic project in his country. In 2009 in collaboration with the Lions Club Poznan Rotunda (Mr. Mariusz Szeib, Sight First II Coordinator) the idea was put into being. The mobile eye clinic was created, thanks to the great support of ophthalmic equipment and medicine manufacturers. In 2013 the Third Eye Project was registered as a foundation in the National Court Registry. |
